Clean Energy Products

Increasing energy processing at home allows Alberta to reduce its environmental footprint and showcase its environmental standards as a secure supplier of clean energy products.

North West Sturgeon Refinery is the first refinery in the world that incorporates CO2 capture into the initial design, and will demonstrate that Alberta has the lowest carbon footprint solutions for converting bitumen into diesel fuel.

The North West Sturgeon Refinery sells it carbon to Enhance Energy who operates the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL), the world’s largest carbon capture and storage project. This 240-kilometre pipeline employs safe, proven technology to gather, compress and store up to 14.6 million tonnes of CO2 per year, the equivalent to removing 2.6 million cars off the road annually.

William’s addition of valued-added processing facilities will reduce greenhouse gases and sulphur dioxide emissions from oilsands’ upgraders at Suncor and CNRL’s Horizon facilities in northeastern Alberta by recovering valuable commodities from emissions that would otherwise be burned. This will reduce annual Carbon Dioxide – CO2 emissions by more than 500,000 tonnes and annual Sulphur Dioxide – SO2 emissions by 4,500 tonnes. These reductions will come at no cost to government or taxpayers.
