The Process

Upstream Icon

UPSTREAM

The exploration and production of oil and gas resources. Activities include seismic, drilling, supply and manufacturing. Upstream operations in Alberta include oilsands production in Fort McMurray and natural gas production in Grande Prairie.

MIDSTREAM

The processing, storage and transportation of crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids. A vital link between where energy resources are extracted and where they are sold. Western Canada has more than 250,000 kilometres of pipeline, mostly in Alberta.

DOWNSTREAM

The refining and marketing side of the energy industry. In this stream, energy commodities are processed, shipped, packaged and delivered to consumers. Alberta’s downstream operations include petrochemical plants and refineries in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, Joffre and other parts of Alberta. These facilities produce gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and industrial chemicals.
